The bridge path

Can you bike across the Gordie Howe International Bridge?

Yes. The bridge has a separated multi-use path for people on bikes and on foot, and it is free to use. It runs about 3 km (1.8 miles) between the border inspection booths, and takes about 20 minutes by bike, not counting border processing.

What are the bridge path hours?

From April 1 to October 31 the path is open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.; from November 1 to March 31 it is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Entry closes one hour before closing time. Hours can change for weather, maintenance or border operations, so check the closure notices on the bridge authority’s homepage before you ride.

Where are the bridge path entrances?

The path starts at 4389 Sandwich Street in Windsor and at 6524 West Jefferson Avenue in Detroit. There is no parking at either port of entry; the bridge authority points drivers to the Malden Park trailhead in Windsor and the Clark Park trailhead in Detroit.

Are e-bikes allowed on the bridge path?

Only pedal-assist e-bikes with no throttle, where the motor cuts out at 32 km/h (19 mph). Throttle e-bikes, e-scooters, skateboards, roller skates and other powered rideables are not allowed. Mobility devices for people with disabilities are allowed.

Can I bring my dog across the bridge?

No. Pets are not allowed on the path. Identified service animals are allowed and must stay leashed.

Crossing the border

What ID do I need to bike from Windsor to Detroit?

It depends on your citizenship and status, so check the official rules for your situation before you go. You clear customs and immigration on the bridge in both directions, and you need documents that let you enter the United States and then re-enter Canada. U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Canada Border Services Agency both publish the accepted documents; links are on our Bridge & border page.

Do I go through customs on the bike path?

Yes. Every path user goes through border inspection before leaving the path, at dedicated booths for people on bikes and on foot. Expect a line at busy times and carry ID for every child travelling with you.

What happens if I miss the last entry time in Detroit?

Plan your day so you do not. The path closes to new entries one hour before closing, and any other way back is a separate trip through a different crossing with its own rules. Keep an eye on the clock; the planner shows today’s last entry on any route that crosses the border.

Planning your route

Is the tour really free?

Yes. The routes, directions, printable maps and GPX files are free, with no account and no booking. You pay only for what you choose along the way, like food or museum tickets. If the site helps your day, you can tip the project on Ko-fi.

How long is the Windsor to Detroit bike tour?

As long as you want. The suggested loops range from about 22 km to about 48 km, and the planner measures your exact distance and riding time as you add stops. Allow a full day for the long loop: museums, meals, photos and the border all take time.

Where should I start?

Start at the Malden Park trailhead in Windsor for the shortest ride to the bridge, at the downtown Windsor riverfront for the full riverfront and Sculpture Park, or at the Clark Park trailhead in Detroit to ride Detroit only without crossing the border.

Can I follow the route on my phone?

Yes. Every route has a share link and a QR code on the printout that opens the same route on your phone. You can also download a GPX file for a bike computer or app, or open the stops in Google Maps.

On the bike

Is it safe to bike in Detroit?

Many people ride Detroit every day, and the routes favour trails, bike lanes and quieter streets, but some legs share roads with traffic. Ride with lights, lock your bike well at every stop, stay aware of your surroundings as you would in any big city, and check the weather and air quality before you leave.

Can I rent a bike for the crossing?

Possibly, but ask first. Some rental and share bikes are not allowed to leave their city or country. Tell the rental shop you plan to cross the border before you pay.

What should I bring?

Your border documents, a good lock (or two), lights, water, a basic repair kit and a charged phone. Bring a printed copy of your route too: it works without data and with a dead battery.

About the project

Who runs Motor Cities Cycling Tours?

It is a one-person project by Ty, a local rider who put together the routes, stops and tips he wished existed when the bridge path opened. It is not affiliated with the bridge authority or either city.

Do you run guided tours?

Not yet. Everything here is self-guided. Guided summer rides, including during Detroit techno week in May, may come later if there is interest. Follow us on Instagram or join the Discord to hear first.
